While Newburyport wasn’t a whaling port, residents were interested in the cost of whale oil used in lamps and machine lubrication. On this day in 1843, the newspaper reported the past week’s sales at the New Bedford Oil Market as a few hundred barrels of sperm oil at 78 cent per gallon and right whale oil at 4 cents per gallon, totaling about 31,500 gallons in all.
