Coming to town

Young stars from Circus Smirkus are once again tumbling into Newbury for four performances this weekend.

This year’s theme is “Carnival,” being presented as a fundraiser for Theater in the Open on Friday at 1 and 6 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. at Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, 5 Little’s Lane.

Tickets are $23 for adults and $19 for children 12 and under. They are available at Henry Bear’s Park at The Tannery Marketplace in Newburyport, online at www.smirkus.org or by calling 877-SMIRKUS.

Tuneful time

The Newburyport Chamber Music Festival kicks off Monday with “A Guided Tour of Bela Bartok’s String Quartet No. 4.” The free lecture, led by artistic director David Yang, will take place at 3 p.m. at the Newburyport Public Library, 94 State St.

This week also features two free performances of “Puppetry, Storytelling & Music” with Theater in the Open and Auricolae Music Troupe. Those will be held Wednesday at noon at the Gatekeeper’s House at Maudslay State Park and at 4 p.m. on Inn Street.

Fun in the sun

The free PowWow! Summer Series continues this month in the Millyard in Amesbury, offering music on Friday nights from 6:30 to 8:30, movies on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. and fitness classes on Sunday mornings at 9.

This weekend features performances by The Lied To’s and Carlo Cacho-Negrete; a screening of “Zoo”; and a workout with Emily Chandra Yoga. Next weekend is Bahama Bob, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and Boston Sports Club, as well as a magic show at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
