NEWBURYPORT  – Five artists who focus on different materials will be displaying their works this week in the artist shanties in the parking lot near the Custom House and Newburyport harbormaster’s building.

They include Cynthia Keefe, of LamboLane, who paints on leather jackets and boots, fashioning wearable art from vintage and secondhand items; Gary Barbati, an abstract artist who often creates images of musicians with a bright, pop art feel; Adrienne Circelli-Silversmith, a contemporary artist who works in encaustic, oils and mixed media, often painting figures expressing love, pain or joy; Melissa Witherspoon of The Green Bee Studio, who creates “sailor’s valentine” jewelry, inspired by sailors’ art from the 1800s; and Priscilla Brown, a mixed media painter who has lived and painted in the area for many years. Her landscapes, ocean scenes and local house portraits tell the stories of New England.

The shanties will be open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, and evenings until dark. There will be an artists reception on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., with music and light refreshments.
