NEWBURYPORT – The Newburyport Art Association will hold a book launch celebration and signing for Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord’s new book,  “Calligraphy: How I Fell In, Out, and In Love Again” on Sept. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Gaylord joined the association 34 years ago when she moved to Newburyport, so the organization thought it seemed fitting to launch her book at its gallery.

She is best known for her handmade sculptural books that she calls “Spirit Books,” but when she moved to Newburyport, her focus was calligraphy.

After years of interpreting the words of others, she exhibited her first original work, “Childbirth Journey,” about her journey to motherhood through pregnancy, birth and after at the association in 1986.

When she moved into the field of book art, the association was where she had her first solo exhibition. Over the years, she has exhibited her “Spirit Books,” which have garnered many awards.

The association also played a role in her return to calligraphy when a Chinese brush painting class there reawakened her love of ink.

“Calligraphy: How I Fell In, Out, and In Love Again” is an illustrated memoir of a sometimes all-consuming, always challenging and ultimately freeing relationship with calligraphy over 40 years, according to a press release.

Gaylord’s story is about more than how to hold a pen and form letters, it is about growing up and growing older, questioning and slowly finding answers, the press release said.

At the launch, the author will give a short talk about how she came to write the book and the significance of the association in her growth as an artist. A book signing and reception with refreshments will follow.

The art association is located at 65 Water St. The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The gallery is closed Mondays.

Membership in the association, for the artist and supporting members, is rolling. Artist memberships begin at $55 per year, beginning artist memberships for those under the age of 25 are $25, and the supporting patron circle memberships begin at $35 per year.

Membership benefits details may be found at www.newburyportart.org
