NEWBURYPORT – The Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce & Industry will host the eighth annual Cruisin' the '50s car show Thursday, lining downtown streets with colorful, shiny classic cars and trucks.
The event will feature 250 cars handpicked from across New England, as well as a doo-wop concert with Billy D & The Rock-its in the bullnose of Market Square.
Cruisin' the '50s will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. throughout downtown Newburyport. The rain date is Aug. 22.
On the day of the event, the following downtown streets will close at 2 p.m.: State Street, from Market Square to Garden Street; Pleasant Street, from State Street to Green Street; Liberty Street, from Center Street to State; Essex Street, traffic will not be able to turn onto State Street; Temple Street, traffic will not be able to turn onto State Street; and Harris Street will be open to residents only.
From 2 to 2:30 p.m., police details will attempt to locate the owners of any parked vehicles before calling a tow truck to be paid by the vehicle owner. Classic cars will begin to arrive by 3 p.m.
Business owners are encouraged to inform delivery drivers and staff about street closures and times so that they may park in unaffected areas. Owners are asked to wait until 9 p.m. to put out trash and recycling, and encouraged to stay open until the end of the event.
