NEWBURYPORT — Local veteran Donald Jarvis is teaming up with friends at The Salvation Army and Anna Jaques Hospital along with others who will be volunteering to provide a free turkey dinner for the community Feb. 20.

Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 40 Water St. There will be enough food for approximately 200 to 250 meals at this sit-down dinner. No home deliveries will be offered.

“This meal would not be possible without the help and support from Anna Jaques Hospital, who will be helping us cook all the turkeys needed for this dinner,” Jarvis said in a press release. “This is probably one of the biggest free meals in the Newburyport community during the winter months. ... One thing I truly enjoy is bringing people together.”

Guitarist Jim Cate will perform during the dinner, Jarvis said.

A free shuttle service will be doing pickups and drop-offs at Park Circle, the Heritage House, Horton Terrace, the Sullivan Building and the James Steam Mill building. A Newbury shuttle will make stops at Quaker Hill, Oak Ridge and Newbury Village.

The shuttle service will have wheelchair lifts to help people in wheelchairs. The shuttle starts at 4 p.m. and everyone using the service should be ready by 3:45 to 4 p.m.

A volunteer will greet guests in the lobby. Guests are asked to wait in the lobby with the volunteer no later then 4 p.m. at all stops. When the shuttle arrives, volunteers will help everyone get on the bus. The shuttle will make a single return trip following dinner.

To reserve a seat on the shuttle, guests should call 978-308-9186 and leave a message stating where they will be and whether the wheelchair lift would be needed.

“I have a lot of friends in the community,” Jarvis said, “and I am inviting them all to join us; rather it be volunteering or sitting down and enjoying this hot delicious meal. All are welcome, and all are invited. To me, there’s nothing better then good friends and good food.”

If interested in volunteering at the meal or donating desserts, contact Jarvis at or leave a message at 978-308-9186 stating your interest.
