As Newburyport’s wealthiest 18th century merchant, Nathaniel Tracy used his resources to support the patriots’ cause. Tracy owned 110 merchant vessels and 24 privateers, and contributed $160,000 to support the fledgling American government. His privateers captured 120 enemy vessels with a combined worth of more than $4 million, and took 2,225 prisoners.
