Sculptor David M. French (1827-1910) moved to Newburyport in 1864. At his studio on Pleasant Street, French made sculptures of notable locals such as Josiah Little, Caleb Cushing and William Lloyd Garrison. According to his obituary, French considered the Garrison statue, which stands in Brown Square, to be “the grandest work of his life.”
