John C. H. Young was a Newburyport barbershop owner who died in 1889. His gravestone, located at the Old Hill Burying Ground, reads, “A colored man of many virtues, poor as the poorest. He fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and was a father to the fatherless. Kind and obliging to all, he has finished his course and has gone to rest.”
