James Prince (1755-1830) was the 12th wealthiest man in Newburyport in 1800 when he purchased the elegant house at 94 State St. Prince was a prominent merchant and banker, and served as Collector of Customs from 1821 to 1829. In 1807, he leased the home to Jacob Coburn, who converted it to the Newburyport Sun Hotel, which operated in that location for several years.
