In her reminiscences, Margaret Cushing (1855-1955) of Newburyport recalled that during her childhood, her family organized “tables full of turkeys and chickens to be given away at Thanksgiving, and pies of every description... I remember waking up in the autumn and rejoicing to smell quince preserves and jellies making ... ours was a generous household.”
