In September 1804, American politician, diplomat and lawyer Rufus King visited Newburyport. It was remarked that his arrival was “a joyous occasion; the friends of his youth were around him, a thousand reminiscenses were awakened; the old were glad to renew their acquaintance with him, and the young to catch a glimpse of the man whom their fathers had delighted to honor.”
