SALISBURY – Leeward Light Thrift Store and the Leeward Charitable Foundation recently held their annual volunteer appreciation luncheon.

The event celebrated the nonprofit’s 10-year anniversary. During the event, the management team recognized the many volunteers and employees who helped the charitable foundation donate more than $2.2 million to local charities since 2009.

In addressing the 65 people who attended the lunch, Leeward Vice President Shauna Werner said, “In real life terms, that $2.2 million is equivalent to over two million meals or one million gallons of heating fuel. In 10 years, your 50,000 volunteer hours have helped to feed, warm, and/or clothe so many families in need. ... Together, you have done something incredible!”

In 2019, the foundation donated $210,000 to 30 local charities. During the luncheon, representatives of several nonprofits received recognition and donation checks from Leeward Light staff members, including The Pettengill House ($25,000), Our Neighbors’ Table ($25,000), the Boys and Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley ($17,500), Community Action Inc. ($20,000), and Community Service of Newburyport ($7,000).

“We cannot thank the Leeward volunteers and staff enough for the funding and support you’ve provided over the past 10 years, said Tiffany Nigro of The Pettengill House. “Thank you for all of the clothing, furniture and all of the support you provide the Greater Newburyport area.”

Lyndsey Haight, executive director of Our Neighbors’ Table said, Leeward has donated more than $215,000 to the organization since 2009.

“Additionally, we have sent hundreds of people to your stores looking for suits for a job interview or basic household items they could not otherwise afford. I can’t believe how much you donate to local charities,” she said.

Throughout the year, Leeward Light donates proceeds from its thrift stores to local charities that support Salisbury, Newburyport and surrounding communities.

Anyone who would like to help can drop off gently used clothing, household items and furniture at Leeward Light, 126 Bridge Road, Salisbury, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, or call 978-465-1141 to arrange a furniture pickup.
