Editor’s note: The following profiles look at the candidates seeking the Ward 4 seat on the Newburyport City Council:
Address: 9 Farrell St.
Family: married to Grettel with three daughters, Karina, Rebecca and Savanah
Occupation: manager at Firestone
Education: graduate of Newburyport High School, class of ’85, attended Vermont Technical College, Northern Essex Community College, and most recently Kaplan, where I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree. Also, a Dale Carnegie Management graduate.
Experience in city government: No experience; ran for City Council in 2013
Why I am running: So the residents of Ward 4 can be heard. Transparency in City Hall is severely lacking. We need a more balanced City Council.
Central waterfront: Leave it open, a small welcome center and the harbormaster’s building (restrooms, etc.). Otherwise, leave it open, and enjoy our treasure that many from far away come to visit and see.
Biggest issue: Lower the debt the residents are being asked to absorb and control the spending. Balance the budget.
Special interests: I have no special interests. My interest is in what is best for the residents of Ward 4 and the city. We as a council would need to make the best choices for the city and its residents. We need to become more transparent and get the citizens involved again. We need to encourage involvement and dialogue with the residents. The council needs to learn to compromise and not be so one-sided.
