Library closed Presidents Day

Newburyport Public Library will be closed Monday, Feb. 17, in honor of Presidents Day.

There are book returns at the library’s main entrance at 94 State St. and next to Market Basket on Storey Avenue. The library reopens Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m.

Brown School forums slated

The Conversation Café hosts a community session on the Brown School’s redevelopment Thursday, Feb. 13, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Senior Center, 331 High St.

Using a structured format, the session will address what residents hope or fear will be the redevelopment’s impact on the community and neighborhood.

Residents can express their views and hear other points of view. The format stresses intentional listening. Sessions will conclude with a recap of “what we heard.”

A second session will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Belleville Congregational Church, 300 High St.

Souper Saturday set for Feb. 29

Souper Saturday will be held Feb. 29 at Emma L. Andrews Library and Community Center, 77 Purchase St.

The event is from 12 noon until the soup runs out. The meal includes beef stew and mashed potato soup from Port City Sandwich, fish chowder, minestrone, split yellow pea soup with kielbasa and Italian wedding soup.

There will also be fresh bread and homemade desserts. A $5 donation is appreciated to fund the library’s children’s programs.

Elks will host senior dinner

The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks will host a senior dinner Sunday, Feb. 16, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at 25 Low St.

The meal will include turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing, gravy, rolls and pies.

Beach walking tours slated

Plum Island Outdoors will conduct walking tours of North Point at Plum Island.

The tours, led by Bill Sargent, will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, and Monday, Feb. 17 — Presidents Day. The tours, rain or shine, are from Plum Island Beach to the south jetty and back.

Free parking is available in the Plum Island Beach parking lot. Participants can see the erosion on Plum Island at North Point, and discuss possible solutions for erosion at Reservation Terrace.

Kelcourse holds office hours

State Rep. James Kelcourse will offer office hours Friday, Feb. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 23 Green St.

No appointment is necessary. Kelcourse represents the First Essex District, which includes Newburyport, Amesbury and Salisbury.

Top films at public library

Academy Award-nominated films will be shown on select Monday and Tuesday nights in February and March at Newburyport Public Library, 94 State St.

Openings at River Valley

River Valley Charter School, a public Montessori school, is accepting grade K-8 applications for the 2020-21 enrollment lottery.

The school has 32 openings in its free, full-day kindergarten program. Applications for grades 1-8 will be accepted for placement on the school’s wait list. All enrollment takes place through a public lottery.

Clubs seek health fair sponsors

The combined Lions and Exchange clubs of Greater Newburyport seek sponsors and table vendors for their first health and wellness fair on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Elks Lodge, 21 Low St.

Vendors from health-related fields will demonstrate their goods and services. Free admission.

The clubs are looking for sponsors at the $1,000, $500, $300 and $100 levels. All sponsorships are tax deductible through the Lions Club 501(c)(3) (EIN 47-3532870) status. Sponsorships include the option of a table display. Company logos will be included in all advertising.

Table vendors are also sought in the fields of acupuncture, assisted living, children’s day care, chiropractic, dental, eye care, financial management, fitness, hearing, holistic medicine, home health care, hospital, massage, nutrition, physical therapy and yoga/meditation. The table fee is $50.
