NEWBURY – A Plum Island man was taken to an area hospital Sunday morning after driving his car off Plum Island Turnpike and into salt marsh mud across the street from the Bob Lobster restaurant.

Officials said the elderly driver lost control of his 2003 Pontiac Aztek around 8 a.m. and it took about two hours for police and firefighters to remove the car from the mud. Newbury fire Chief Richard Janvrin said it appears the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel. Janvrin described the man's injuries as "non life-threatening."

Plum Island Turnpike remained open to traffic for most of the two hours emergency responders were there.
