NEWBURYPORT — The city is still looking for Snow Angels or volunteers to help the elderly with shoveling this winter, especially in the Merrill Street and Allen Street neighborhoods.
With the first significant snowstorm continuing into Tuesday, Newburyport Youth Services and the Council on Aging are counting on people to help senior citizens and people with physical disabilities through the Snow Angels Program, which runs through March 31.
The program's goal is to help bring together residents who want to keep their sidewalks clear, but are unable to do so, with volunteers who want to help out the community.
Volunteers are asked to help a resident for the entire winter and to shovel when there is a half inch or more of snow. Local ordinances require that sidewalks be cleared within 48 hours after a storm.
Some residents may require their property be cleared earlier if they receive care from the Visiting Nurses Association or Meals on Wheels.
To help, call Roseanne at 978-462-0430 or 978-490-9911.
