NEWBURYPORT — Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center, at One Plum Island Turnpike, is a natural history education and visitor center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and Monday holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mass Audubon members receive discounts on programs. Join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fee is $17. Registration is not required.

VACATION WEEK FLYBYS AT JOPPA FLATS

Joppa Flats offers daily themes, art activities, experiments and scheduled presentations for everyone in a casual drop-in atmosphere for families with children ages 2 to 12. Adults must accompany children. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Eagles, Owls and Hawks, Oh My! Thursday, Dec.29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Winter Birds and Backyard Treats. Fee per program is $7 per child. Registration is not required.

NEW YEAR'S MADNESS

Start birding in the new year with an all-day excursion to Plum Island, Salisbury Beach and Cape Ann. Sunday, Jan. 1, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fee is $55. Registration is required.

Active play and learning with Joppa Flats teacher-naturalist Lisa Hutchings for preschoolers, ages 3 to 5, with a favorite adult. Choose one of four sessions. Fee of $16 includes one adult and one child. Thursday, Jan. 5, 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m.; Friday, Jan. 6, 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m. Registration is required.
