Rennegade makes a splash in Newburyport waters

NEWBURYPORT — When many boats cast off from the waterfront after Yankee Homecoming last weekend, they left plenty of room for one of the largest vessels to dock here so far this summer.

Rennegade, a 112-foot, 235-ton Westport yacht hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, docked in Newburyport on Monday night, making a stop in its monthslong journey up the East Coast from its home port.

Rennegade was built in 2013 and belongs to Renn Holdings Inc., a Peshtigo, Wisconsin-based company owned by Mark Renn, according to its entry in the online Boat Database.

It's the yacht's first-ever stop in Newburyport waters, but this marks a return for its captain, Chris Wills, who said he has made port in the Clipper City several times over the years while working as captain aboard other private boats.

As he stepped out for a walk along the waterfront Tuesday, Wills spoke of the rarity of boats as big as Rennegade stopping in harbors as small as Newburyport's, but said he was glad the yacht owners wanted to spend time there this week.

"One of the benefits here is that it's a nice public dock with a good, deep entrance," Wills said. "It's a great little town, and it's vibrant with a nice downtown area."

Wills said he would lead the boat out of town Wednesday to continue its recreational summer journey north, which he said is an enjoyable way to spend the season.

"It makes the summer worthwhile," Wills said.
