NEWBURYPORT — Federal, state and local officials have requested that citizens stay away from the staging area that has been designated on Plum Island to facilitate the rebuilding of the south jetty of the Merrimack River.

Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that the presence of visitors near the public parking lot on the north end of Plum Island can slow progress of the $3.6 million project.

They have put up temporary fences near the entrance to a new temporary wooden roadway from the lot to the jetty, but they asked that visitors keep away from the area to ensure safety of both workers and sightseers.
