PLUM ISLAND — Beaches in Newburyport will be closed this holiday weekend due to high bacteria counts, Mayor Donna Holaday has announced.
But beaches in Newbury are open, said Tracy Blais, town administrator. Beaches in Salisbury are also open, according to town officials there.
The beaches of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation, which include all the beaches from Newbury to the southernmost end of the island, are also open.
Newburyport's section of Plum Island extends from 49th Street northward to the mouth of the Merrimack River.
Newburyport city officials say that effluent coming down the river after Tropical Storm Irene has raised bacterial levels to unhealthy levels. But town officials in Newbury, whose beachfront on Plum Island is to south of that of Newburyport, said that their health officials have not found dangerous conditions.
