The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, 63 Elm St., Salisbury, offers its Home for the Holidays adoption promotion Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fees waived for the first 20 adult cats (at least a year old) adopted. More at mrfrs.org

Groovin’ at The Grog

Popular local cover band Joppa Flatts performs Saturday at 9 p.m. at The Grog, 13 Middle St., Newburyport. Doors open at 8 p.m. Cover: $5. 

Holiday tradition

Santa comes to Merrimac

The annual Merrimac Santa Parade kicks off at 1 p.m., Sunday, from the Dr. Frederick N. Sweetsir School, 104 Church St.

Merriment in Market Square

Santa and Mrs. Claus kick off the holiday season Sunday when they arrive at the Newburyport boardwalk by Coast Guard boat about 3:30 p.m., then lead a parade through downtown before gathering in Market Square for the annual Christmas tree lighting and carols about 4 p.m.
