On this day in 1843, Richard Coffin of Newbury recorded in his diary: “William and I have killed and dressed my last hog, have done little besides. Mr. Stephen Thurlow and wife came here this am. He went to N.Port, they took dinner here, and went home before tea …. Temperature in the morning 4 above zero, the lowest but once this season.”
