On this day in 1779, Offin Boardman, Newburyport ship captain, recorded in his diary: “Captain Page and mate, two hands, arrived after rowing 25 fathoms water to Hogg Island…in a small boat that they bought at a dear rate [from] the captain of the privateer. [They were] robbed even of their shoe buckles.”
