WEST NEWBURY — The Police Department’s annual Toys for Tots collection is underway through Dec. 10.

Residents are encouraged to drop off new, unwrapped toys in the police station lobby to help bring cheer to children in need this holiday season.

Toys for Tots, established in 1947 by reservist Maj. Bill Hendricks, is a nationwide nonprofit program run by the U.S. Marine Corps.

The program’s goal is to “deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens.”

The organization will pick up the toys from collection areas from Dec. 1 to Dec. 10.
