NEWBURYPORT — Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying those responsible for smashing the windows of 12 vehicles parked in the downtown area sometime Saturday night into Sunday morning.

According to local police, 11 of the vehicles were parked in the east and west waterfront municipal lots, while another was parked on Federal Street.

Newburyport police Sgt. Howard Adams said no items were reported stolen from the vehicles.

“It appears to be malicious mischief,” Adams said.

The first call regarding the incidents was fielded by police at 7:10 a.m. yesterday. For the rest of the morning and afternoon, police were busy tracking down the owners of all victimized vehicles. By mid-afternoon, all but three owners had been reached, according to Adams.

Adams said he can’t recall the last time he has been confronted with such a significant amount of car vandalism at one time.

“It’s been a while, at least for me,” Adams said.

Anyone with information regarding Saturday night’s incident is urged to contact the Newburyport Police Department at 978-462-4411.
