In response to the May 23 article, “Residents protest dollar store,” perhaps the Town of Merrimac should consider three alternative uses of the land. Have the town purchase the land to preserve the rural small-town ambience as stated. Option one would be to establish community gardens where residents could lease some of the land to grow vegetables or flowers. This has worked well in other communities such as Amesbury’s Battis farm. Option two would be to build a children’s playground similar to that of Action Cove in West Newbury. Merrimac does have a playground at Sweetsir School, but certainly not on a large level. Finally, option three would be to construct a youth center. This would help build a community spirit and self-esteem with structured activities for the young people of Merrimac.
