To the editor:

Each year, the Amesbury Public Library Children’s Room, in collaboration with the Amesbury elementary schools, hosts a summer reading program.

This year, kids recorded over 3,000 hours and 5,072 days of reading using our new online reading program! Kids also collected beads for each hour or day they read to make a colorful keychain and kids from infants to 12 years old attended programming such as rocket making, sewing workshops, spaceship story time, a live reptile show, and a visit from actor Sheryl Faye as Sally Ride.

The Children’s Room also hides a stuffed creature around town for families to find each week. Rover the Tortoise was found 637 times this summer. Thank you to Hedgehog General Store, Coco, Early & Associates, Ovedia Chocolates, Health Matters. Amesbury Carriage Museum, 18 Friend Street, Ben’s Uniforms, Willie Jo & Woodie’s, and Modern Heritage for hosting Rover this summer.

This program is made possible by funding from a number of sources. The Friends of the Amesbury Public Library provide much of our programming budget throughout the year and contribute greatly to the funding for our summer programming.

This summer, we also had generous contributions from Amesbury Youth Funding and the Amesbury Cultural Council. Additional support comes from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Massachusetts Library System, and the Bruins.

Coupon donations provided by Hodgie’s Ice Cream, Twin Lanterns Ice Cream, Cider Hill Farm, as well as Canobie Lake Park and other businesses provide awesome rewards for our participants and are greatly appreciated.

The Topsfield Fair is also very generous in providing free tickets for readers who earned 30 points in the summer reading program. This year, 153 kids completed this goal and will be going to the fair for free. Thank you all for these wonderful contributions.

Thank you to our very supportive community that helps create a wonderful place where all families can enjoy events, programs, audiobooks, books, movies, and games during the summer and throughout the year. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at the library!
