To the editor:
The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library would like to offer our most sincere thanks to everyone who made our 39th Great Old Book sale such a wonderful success! We are humbled by the support of so many of our volunteers who showed up each day to unpack, organize, stack and showcase approximately 30,000 books and other materials in preparation for the sale and then continued tidying and restacking throughout the weekend long event once the sale opened to the public on Thursday morning. The Wednesday Opening Night is for Friends of the Library only. Please become a friend so that you can take advantage of the full offering of items that we have to offer.
We gratefully acknowledge the efforts and assistance of the city’s custodial staff, who helped us set up and break down tables and generally kept the program room looking great for our event. In addition, they assisted us in dismantling the book sale and loading the truck that transported all our remaining books to Discover Books, an organizational mission is to divert used books from going into landfills by finding them new readers, through online resales, donations to literacy focused and community-based non-profits and recycling.
Most importantly, we wish to thank the community members who donated and purchased books, sheet music, DVDs, CDs, and LPs. Because of you, we were able to raise more $8,780 to underwrite many vital library programs, fund the purchase of new library materials, and continue to make available the museum passes that library patrons utilize by signing them out at the circulation desk or online at the Newburyport Public Library homepage. We look forward to seeing you at the library, and sincerely hope you will join us again for our next book sale, March 25-28, 2020 in the library’s Program Room.
