To the editor:
Bunny's dead. Howard "Bunny" Fernald. A lot of you may know his last name by the marina he and his family operated for decades on the Parker River in Newbury. Others may recall his numerous columns published in The Daily News. Bunny had a no-frills, opinionated oral history of his youthful hijinks and his wartime memories that I, for one, found immensely entertaining and full of common-sense wisdom.
His wife died close to two years ago, and like a lot of longtime life partners, I suspect something inside Bunny died at that time, too. He stopped submitting to The News after that. Then, he probably got sick or took a fall. I missed seeing the photo of his red hair blowing in the wind, as well as his hometown commentary.
You were a wise man, Bunny. Your readers miss you. Rest in peace.
