WESTON — Walker Bartkiewicz made history on Friday night, kicking a school-record 47-yard field goal to help lead Newburyport football to a dominant 31-6 win over Weston.
The game got off to a wild start, with Weston fumbling the opening kickoff before Newburyport handed it right back with an interception in the end zone returned to midfield. After that lapse, however, Newburyport controlled the rest of the way.
Quarterback Finn Sullivan started things off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bartkiewicz, who knocked through the extra point to make it 7-0 with 4:17 to play in the first.
Running back Jacob Buontempo added a 27-yard touchdown run midway through the second, and then Bartkiewicz uncorked his record-setting kick to make it 17-0.
Nick Petty came down with an interception on defense just before the half, and just before the end of the third quarter Buontempo scored on a 9-yard rush for his second touchdown of the day.
Trevor Ward came up with a 25-yard touchdown shortly afterwards to make it 31-0, at which point Newburyport’s starters came out and the JV squad allowed a late Weston touchdown.
Newburyport (3-6) will now await its final non-playoff game next weekend against an opponent to be determined before getting ready for Thanksgiving against Amesbury. The date, time and opponent will be finalized by Sunday.
